Over fifty Women In Film Mentors and Mentees gathered at the law offices of Greenberg-Glusker in Century City, on Tuesday, November 27, for the launch of Women In Film’s Mentoring Circles, a pilot mentoring initiative produced by the WIF Foundation.
Each Mentoring Circle will consist of two Mentors, successful in two different entertainment disciplines, and ten Mentees. They will meet up to six times over the course of 2013 for two-hour sessions, the goal being to provide Mentees with career guidance, support and networking opportunities.
The Mentoring Circles will become available to the WIF General Membership in 2013, and information will be forthcoming via wif.org, our newsletters and on Facebook.com/WIFLA.
The launch of the pilot program comes on the heels of the enormously successful Speed Mentoring session held on October 29 (CLICK HERE for details). Both Mentoring events were developed and executed by the WIF Foundation’s Mentoring Committee, co-chaired by manager/producer Marion Rosenberg (The Marion Rosenberg Office) and Chevonne O’Shaunessey (President, Mission Pictures International/American Cinema International).
WIF Foundation Trustee Chair Susan Cartsonis welcomed the group of mentees and explained the evolution of the mentoring program. “Historically, Women In Film has provided mentoring on a one-to-one basis,” Cartsonis explained, “but recently, the volume of members interested increased significantly, and we needed a different approach. We are thrilled to see so many women looking to Women In Film as a key resource to achieving their career goals. It re-affirms what we know is true about Women In Film, it’s the best networking tool in town.”
Mentors with experience in all aspects of the entertainment industry – production, writing, directing, acting, new media, marketing and business affairs - camped out at tables in the spacious 21st floor dining room at Greenberg-Glusker, graciously provided for the meeting by WIF Foundation Trustee and Greenberg-Glusker partner, Hillary Bibicoff. Cartsonis encouraged the Mentees to mingle and sit in on different conversations to get to know the various Mentors as well as their fellow Mentees.
The response from the Mentees to the Circle was very enthusiastic. “I originally looked forward to being mentored by someone with a directing background,” said actress and director Christina Lind, “but now I see that getting exposed to all the different aspects of the business is going to be even more helpful.”
Mentorship Committee member Cindy Bond (President, Mission Films) sponsored the event, providing a catered light dinner of quiche, salmon rolls and raw vegetables. Conversations lingered long past the designated two-hour mark, as Mentors and Mentees eagerly anticipated the next session. The Mentorship Committee will be contacting all participants with the schedule and locations.
