This study examines gender roles of speaking characters in top-grossing films. This is our fourth Annenberg report, focusing on the gender of independent speaking characters appearing in 100 topgrossing fictional films from 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007. In total, 500 movies and over 21,000 speaking characters have been content analyzed for gender prevalence, demographic information, and hypersexualization. Below, we highlight the study's key findings.

'A River Changes Course' is Honored - Again

a-river-changes-course-webKalyanee Mam' s A River Changes Course has garnered a number of awards since our "Women Who Dare!" Sundance panel back in January.

Kalyanne's film won the Grand Jury Prize of World Cinema Documentary at Sundance in 2013.

Within the last week the documentary has been recognized:

Winner! of the Conscience Award at the Docville Film Festival in Leuven, Belgium.

Winner!! of the Golden Gate Award for Best Documentary Feature at The San Francisco International Film Festival.

Winner!!! of the Special Jury Prize for Best Director and Winner!!!! for Best Cinematography at The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Documentary Award Competition.

WIFF Trustee Sharon Lawrence Feted

sharon-lawrence-2009-webYou may know her from her multiple EMMY nominated and SAG Award winning portrayal of ADA Sylvia Costas Sipowitz in the ground breaking "NYPD Blue" or as a stay-at-home prostitute in "Desperate Housewives", a murderous realtor on "Monk" or a sociopathic serial "killer on Law and Order: SVU".

Now, Sharon Lawrence has won the "Best Actor in a Short Film" award at the Women's Independent Film Festival for her work in "The Visit"!  It will be screening at the festival in Los Angeles this Saturday at 6pm.

After Tiller, WIF Grant Winner, is Honored ... again

 after-tiller-07After Tiller, winner of the Women In Film Documentary Grant at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival has gone on to win the Documentary Jury Award at the Sarasota Film Festival and Honorable Mention in the documentary competition fo the Nashville Film Festival.

We congratulate directors Martha Shane & Lana Wilson and the rest of the production team for their success.
